Arey Grey is a brand that offers natural supplements that focus on providing the necessary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support hair color and prevent or slow down the graying process.

Though graying hair is known as an effect of aging, some individuals may experience this at a younger age due to a variety of factors, including genetics, stress, nutrient deficiency, alcohol consumption, long-term health conditions, and more.

Research suggests that, in some cases, graying hair can be reversed, especially when it involves oxidative stress and nutritional deficiencies. Supplements, especially those that include antioxidants, copper, iron, calcium, vitamin B, vitamin D, and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) have shown some success in repigmenting graying hair. As Arey Grey’s Not Today, Grey supplement includes these ingredients and more, it may be a potentially effective option for certain individuals.

In this article, we discuss the pros and cons of Arey Grey’s hair supplement, as well as its benefits, potential side effects, and more. In addition, we chatted with Dr. Jonathan Rick, a board-certified dermatologist, to find out more about hair supplements that target graying hair, specifically their effectiveness and if he recommends them.

Is Arey Grey FDA-approved?

No, Arey Grey is not FDA-approved. It’s also important to note that the research on using hair supplements to increase hair pigment and prevent hair graying is limited.

Arey Grey Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Made using natural ingredients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that may benefit overall health
  • Contains ingredients that may help repigment gray hair in some individuals
  • May be used proactively to prevent graying
  • Works for all hair colors and types, making it an inclusive solution for hair graying concerns
  • May be used to maintain beard color, making it a useful option for many individuals

Cons

  • May take time to notice results, which may not work well for everyone
  • Not a permanent solution, as the supplements cannot fully reverse graying hair
  • More research is still needed regarding the ingredients’ effectiveness

Benefits of Arey Grey Hair Supplements

Arey Grey may work for some individuals as Not Today, Grey uses ingredients, including specific vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that have been proven to be effective in lessening hair graying and possibly repigmenting graying hair in certain individuals. However, it may not work for everyone and more research is still needed.

A Word From Our Expert

— Dr. Jonathan Rick

The mechanisms that drive grey hair have not been well elucidated yet, but certainly involve a confluence of stressors, genetics, and immunology. In general, we think that the pigment cells (melanocytes) decline with age and are not appropriately replenished by stem cells that reside in the hair bulge. While oxidative stress may play a role in this, it is unclear to what extent. It is similarly undetermined how impactful dietary supplements are in reducing oxidative stress in the hair. I am not in the practice of recommending these to my patients, but will continue to look for literature that may change my future practice."

Research notes that graying hair can be reversed in certain cases, especially when it involves factors, such as oxidative stress and nutritional deficiencies. Oxidative stress, which may be caused by emotional stress, pollution, smoking, and more may lead to an absence of antioxidants in the hair follicles. This is associated with prematurely graying hair. Reducing stress and increasing antioxidant intake is linked to reduced oxidative stress, a major factor that can impact overall hair and scalp health, as well as hair graying.

Nutritional deficiencies, specifically not having enough copper, iron, vitamin B, ferritin, calcium, zinc, and vitamin D are also associated with earlier graying.

In addition to certain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that aim to help slow down graying, Arey Grey’s Not Today, Grey also includes PABA, or vitamin B10, which is an organic compound associated with repigmenting gray hairs.

How long does it take for Arey Grey to work?

According to the company, it can take 1-3 months before an individual notices any changes in their hair, however, results may vary.

Not Today, Grey Ingredients

Not Today, Grey contains a blend of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that aim to support repigmenting graying hair, while also boosting overall hair health.

Vitamin B7 (Biotin)

Biotin is a key vitamin that helps the body produce keratin, a protein that comprises the hair, skin, and nails. Biotin may be used to support overall hair health, however, more research is still needed. In addition, some studies suggest that biotin deficiency may contribute to hair loss in certain individuals.

Vitamins B6 and B9

Arey Grey’s Not Today, Grey includes vitamins B6 and B9 to support optimal body functioning.

Vitamin B6 helps various enzymes in the body work properly, while vitamin B9 supports the production of genetic material, helps produce red blood cells, and is involved in creating and breaking down proteins.

Vitamin B5

Vitamin B5 promotes cell turnover and supports the adrenal glands. Research notes that Vitamin B5 is also associated with prolonging the anagen, or growth, phase of hair follicles, which may contribute to longer, healthier hair.

Selenium

Selenium is a mineral with potent antioxidant properties that may help defend your body against free radicals. Increased antioxidant intake may help reduce oxidative stress, which contributes to hair graying in certain individuals.

Vitamin B12 and Iron

Vitamin B12 is thought to increase melanin production, with vitamin B12 deficiency contributing to premature hair graying. Iron supports the production of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to cells throughout the body, promoting growth and repair.

Vitamin D and Copper

Vitamin D plays a key role in hair follicle growth, while copper supports the health of blood vessel tissue. By promoting healthy blood vessels, copper may stimulate hair follicles by ensuring they receive oxygen and essential nutrients.

Proprietary Blend

Arey Grey’s proprietary blend contains PABA, fo-ti root, and black sesame seed extract. These ingredients work together to help boost melanin production, protect hair against graying, and prevent free radical damage.

  • PABA is a chemical that’s naturally found in the body, as well as in several foods. PABA supplements have been used since the 40s to darken gray hair, and studies have found daily doses of PABA to be effective in re-pigmenting gray hair, however more research is still needed.
  • Fo-ti root is one of the most widely-used herbs in Chinese medicine for various signs of aging. It’s been found to increase melanin production, which may help re-pigment gray hair. Fo-ti root is also rich in antioxidants, helping to combat free radicals that may damage the hair follicles.
  • Black sesame seed extract contains high amounts of antioxidants and other nutrients that may help support healthy hair, including vitamins A, E, and B, as well as fatty acids. These components may help prevent cell damage that contributes to signs of aging, including greying hair.

Keep in mind that research on hair supplements for graying prevention and repigmenting is lacking, as most studies use a very small sample size or the studies are conducted on animals.

Why We Recommend Arey Grey

We recommend Arey Grey’s Not Today, Grey because it prioritizes the use of effective ingredients.

No Oxidizing Agents

Typical hair dyes contain two primary ingredients: a coloring agent and an oxidizing agent. The oxidizing agent (i.e. ammonia or hydrogen peroxide) works as an activator, allowing the synthetic pigment to penetrate the hair.

Unfortunately, oxidizing agents have been found to damage hair, especially when they’re used repeatedly. They also contribute to oxidative stress, which is linked to premature greying.

Not Today, Grey is free of these harmful chemicals, instead using essential nutrients to prevent greying.

Free of Allergenic Substances

Many hair dyes contain a chemical called paraphenylenediamine, or PPD. Some people are allergic to PPD, experiencing symptoms like itching, irritation, and redness. In some people, exposure to PPD in hair dyes can even trigger severe allergy symptoms.

By opting for a proactive approach with Not Today, Grey, some individuals may be able to avoid PPD altogether. Arey Grey’s supplements are formulated with natural ingredients and are free of common allergens. In addition, they are also vegan and gluten-free.

Research-Backed Ingredients

Arey Grey uses science-backed ingredients, including copper, black sesame seed, iron, vitamin D, PABA, and more that may help slow or prevent premature graying, while also supporting overall hair health.

Is Arey Grey Safe?

According to the company, Not Today, Grey supplements include ingredients that are within tolerable limits for many adults. However, because the FDA doesn’t regulate supplements, it’s important to be mindful of potential side effects.

In general, supplements may be associated with side effects, such as:

  • Liver damage
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Increased risk of bleeding

In addition, supplements containing antioxidants may reduce the effectiveness of certain treatments, such as chemotherapy.

Always speak with your healthcare provider prior to taking a new supplement. Be sure to let them know if you have any health conditions, or are taking any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, vitamins, or supplements.

“I have just started getting noticeable grey strands in the last few years. I believe this does work for some people, but just wasn't working for me.”
